Tennent jumped out to an early 13-5 lead, but foul trouble and costly turnovers at the end of the first allowed New Hope to close out the quarter on an 8-3 run cutting Tennent’s lead to three after one. Foul trouble continued for the Panthers in the second as three of their five starters were forced to sit with two fouls each. However, despite the early foul trouble they managed to grind out the first half and found themselves down 27-30. “It was a tough first half, said Coach Whitney. We couldn’t catch a break with the fouls. Some of them were bad plays on our part and out of frustration, but others we just got caught in the wrong position. Our three leading scorers picked up two fouls each and were forced to sit most of the first half. We had to play a freshman and a sophomore who really don’t have a lot of Varsity experience, but I thought they gave us some productive minutes.” The story was the same for the Panthers in the third, as they continued to battle foul trouble and had too many unforced turnovers. They were down 35-39 heading in to the fourth, setting the stage for an exciting finish. Both teams knocked down some early free throws in the fourth as New Hope held a 40-38 lead. On the next possession, Tennent’s Brianna Broccardi was fouled and went to the line to shoot two. Broccardi knocked down the first, but fell short on the second when Kelly Scipione secured the missed shot and found Broccardi who scored on a layup to give the Panthers a 41-40 lead. Just as Tennent takes the lead they commit a foul on the next possession and put the Lions on the line where they would make both to retake the lead 42-41. Another turnover and foul by the Panthers, put the Lions back on the line where they shot 70% for the game and suddenly the Lions were back on top 44-41. Tennent however answered right back on the next two possession retaking the lead 45-44. Another foul by the Panthers, allowed the Lions to tie the game from the line at 45-45. But the stage was set for Tennent’s Emma Stanfield as she scored the next six points and all but sealed the deal. First on an offensive rebound and put back, then she secured a defensive rebound where she was fouled and hit both ends of the one and one, followed by a steal on the next possession where she was fouled again and would hit both free throws to give Tennent a 51-45 lead. Two more free throws for the Lions and three more for the Panthers extended the lead to 54-47, before New Hope’s Rachel Saxton hit a running 3 pointer at the buzzer to end the game 54-50. “It was certainly an exciting game, and I’m so proud of how we executed down the stretch. We were in a similar situation on Thursday at North Penn and I didn’t think we did a good job of finishing that game. We didn’t get stops when we needed to and made some poor decisions offensively late in the game. Those are the games we have to learn from and I thought tonight we showed some growth. Tonight we were in foul trouble the entire game and had a freshman in during the final minute, but we answered their runs and made big plays when we needed to and more importantly made free throws when they counted. It was a great team win.” Emma Stanfield led the way with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Jess Rutkowsky chipped in with 10 points (including 2 big 3’s), Kelly Scipione added 8 points and 2 steals, Haley Crossley had 7, Brianna Broccardi had 6, and Chelsea Meltzer had 3.
